$1.5 BILLION GRANT AVAILABLE FOR IMPROVING TRANSPORT PROJECTS IN THE UNITED STATE
11/13/2022
The Department of Transport in the United States has established a funding opportunity under a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) offering a $1.5 billion grant fund. This funding is aimed at improving the infrastructure in America. This grant has been awarded through RAISE, a program that stands for Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity. The program aims to help communities carry out significant projects that impact the country locally and regionally.
Grants given in the RAISE program help both the state-level and local-level project sponsors complete infrastructure projects that are critical in the transportation of freight as well as passengers. The program has considerate application requirements which enable most project sponsors to obtain funding more easily compared to other DOT grant programs in the US.
Some recently funded projects include construction in port Tampa Bay for a new berth, a new snowmelt system that is in Berlin, and a better replacement bridge in Tucson. In the previous year, Raise was able to fund 166 projects across all 50 states.
“The historic investments the Biden-Harris Administration is announcing today will help communities across the country modernize their transportation,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “After decades of underinvestment in America’s infrastructure, we are supporting projects that help people and goods get where they need to go more safely, efficiently, and affordably.”
The projects funded by RAISE are occasionally reviewed and evaluated to ensure safety, a sustainable environment, ensuring quality of life, improved community relationships, economic competition, and opportunities such as tourism.
The funding will be equally divided with an equal share going into rural area developments whereas the other half is directed to urban projects. It is estimated that at least $15 million of the funding will be directed to projects that are located in Areas of Persistent Poverty or that are historically disadvantaged.
The deadline for applications is 11:59 PM EST on February 28, 2023 and selections will be announced no later than June 28, 2023.
